Aedes
Described as “one of the finest choirs in France” (Le Figaro), and capable of “doing everything — singing and performing to perfection” (Le Monde), Aedes stands among Europe’s leading vocal ensembles, acclaimed for the precision and emotional depth of its interpretations.
Founded in 2005 by Mathieu Romano, the seventeen‑voice ensemble has forged under his direction a unique sound — at once precise, sensuous, and powerful — driven by a vibrant energy that speaks directly to the heart.
From the Renaissance to contemporary creation, with ventures into other artistic worlds, Aedes delights in surprising, inventing, and blurring boundaries: dance, theatre, and visual arts intermingle with vocal performance, continually opening new horizons.
Invited on the greatest French and European stages, Aedes also partners with prestigious orchestras in the interpretation of masterpieces from the choral repertoire. Its extensive discography, devoted mainly to music of the 20th and 21st centuries, has received numerous awards.
Firmly rooted in the Hauts‑de‑France region, recognised as a “cultural resource hub” in the Somme department and in residence at the Atelier Lyrique de Tourcoing, Aedes places transmission at the heart of its mission. The ensemble trains tomorrow’s choral conductors, performs for highly diverse audiences, and introduces pupils and teachers to vocal practice.
During the 2025/2026 season, Aedes celebrates its 20th anniversary with two major projects: the release of the complete a cappella works of Francis Poulenc (Aparté) and an extensive tour of its programme “Résonances”, retracing twenty years of an extraordinary choral adventure.
After an initial period of support from 2012 to 2017, the Société Générale Corporate Foundation renewed its partnership with ensemble Aedes in 2024.
