Opéra de Limoges

In 2023, the Opéra de Limoges launched an innovative and ambitious project: the transformation of a former city bus into a travelling stage known as the Chantebus. This initiative aims to bring opera closer to residents of outlying towns and remote neighbourhoods, making artistic practice accessible to audiences who are often far removed from traditional venues. The Chantebus helps modernize the image of bel canto and introduces this musical genre to new listeners.

The project was entrusted to a company in the Lot, near the Corrèze border, specializing in the conversion of trucks and large vehicles. The bus—formerly part of the TCL public‑transport network and having travelled nearly 900,000 kilometres—was fully decontaminated and transformed from top to bottom. The interior was redesigned to create a warm, functional space, including a workstation for the vocal coach, a dance floor, and amenities adapted for performance use.

With a strong commitment to environmental responsibility, the company prioritized eco‑friendly materials. The insulation, for instance, is made from a blend of hemp and flax instead of traditional fibreglass, and part of the vehicle’s electricity is supplied by solar panels installed on the roof. This approach reflects a deep desire to oversee the entire project in line with sustainable‑development principles.

Since spring 2023, the Chantebus has been touring the Limoges metropolitan area, offering vocal workshops for young people in eight municipalities. This travelling set‑up fosters encounters between artists and audiences through mini‑concerts and informal exchanges.

In 2024, the Société Générale Corporate Foundation chose to support this project, demonstrating its commitment to cultural inclusion and social innovation.
