Instrument pool
Initiated in 2005, the instrumental collection of the Mécénat Musical now comprises around fifteen period instruments and about ten modern instruments. All are part of a programme designed to support the professional integration of young musicians by giving them access to exceptional instruments. This enables them to play instruments that are often very costly—yet essential for preparing competitions and concerts—thus supporting their emerging careers under optimal conditions.
Gagliano Violin
The violin crafted by Joseph Gagliano in Naples in 1796 is an instrument with a powerful, rich sound, ideal for a young virtuoso performing as a soloist or in chamber music. The son of the renowned luthier Niccolò Gagliano, Joseph carried on the Neapolitan tradition, celebrated for the quality and balance of its instruments. Combining historical heritage with modern performance needs, this violin offers remarkable versatility and expressiveness. It is currently played by violinist Elise Bertrand.
Cappa Cello
The cello made by Gioffredo Cappa in 1696 is an exceptional instrument that reflects the artisanal mastery of 17th‑century Italian lutherie. Its deep, resonant tone is particularly sought after by classical musicians. After several years in the hands of Jean‑Guihen Queyras, the Cappa cello is now on loan to Maxime Grizard.
Modern Instruments
The Foundation is also committed to the creation of contemporary instruments, working with internationally renowned luthiers such as Stefan von Baehr (viola), Patrick Robin (violin), and Philippe Mahu (violin). These outstanding modern instruments are made available to the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse (CNSMD) of Paris, enabling students to benefit from high‑quality tools for their artistic development.
Through its instrumental collection, the Société Générale Corporate Foundation reaffirms its commitment to preserving musical heritage and supporting young talent.
